Yeah, that is problematic. The thing I like about the given definition is that it's useful even if you don't know where East or South is. By specifying "cardinal direction," I hoped to overcome slight inaccuracies by encouraging the reader to "round" to the nearest cardinal direction. Of course, that's not very helpful for the same reason a definition tied to East or South is not.
